A sealant is a plastic composite resin commonly used on
the posterior teeth- premolars and molars. They are applied
to the biting surfaces of the teeth, acting as a protective
barrier between the teeth and food particles.
Brushing and flossing help remove food and plaque from
the smooth surfaces of teeth, but the toothbrush bristles
are usually unable to effectively penetrate the deep pits
and fissures of the back teeth.
Sealants are relatively easy to apply. The teeth to be
sealed are cleaned and the chewing surface is painted
with an adhesive solution to help the sealant adhere to
the tooth surface. The sealant is then applied to the
pits and fussures of the teeth and a special blue curing
light is used to harden the sealant.
As long as the sealant is in place, it will provide protection
to the tooth. They will last for years and hold up to
normal chewing habits. During your regular dental appointments,
we will check the condition of the sealnts and reapply
them when necessary.
Pit and fissure decay usually develops in early life,
so children and teenagers are obvious candidates. Adults
can benefit from sealants as well. |
